He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Christian Men's Fellowship and a member of the Intermont Lodge of Narrows and the Veterans of Foreign War, Post of Narrows. He was a veteran of World War II having! served in the U.S. Navy.

A graduate of William and Mary, he was retired as the President of Sales and a member of Board of Directors of Pannill Knitting. In World War II, he served as a Major in the U. S.
Army Air Corp. Mr. Pannill was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Chatmoss Country Club, and the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville, where he was a Deacon and Elder. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Stephens Pannill. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs.

Knitting executive Robert Pannill dies in Martinsville Robert Samuel Pannill, retired vice president of sales and member of the board of directors for Pannill Knitting, died Tuesday in a Martinsville hospital. He was 80. Pannill, who worked for the Martinsville fleeced-apparel manufacturer for more than 52 years, started in the cutting room of plant in 1933. He retired from the company in 1975. He was a major in the U.S.
Army Air Corps during World War II. Pannill is credited with helping to market sweat shirts to discount department stores nationwide. Pannill also is survived by a son, Steve Pannill, and a daughter, Margaret Pannill Allen of Greensboro, N.C. A graveside service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Oakwood Cemetery.
